Description

These are some photos I took on the way back to Denton and some that I chose from the internet to mess around with the idea of melting, convergence, bewilderment, distortion, and movement. I used the smudge tool to effectively communicate the motion in the pieces from a focal point in the pieces or an object to make the pieces to make the viewer grasp them and immerse them in these pieces. Every single element that was used has been thought out as I wanted to create depth and make the viewer make sense of the artworks. This idea of movement has always piqued my interest as you can alter any photo to give the image more visual motion from the viewer's perspective making them really feel the artworks through emotion and from the formal elements used. These collections of pieces have some famous artwork from different eras like Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss, c.1907", Michaelangelo's "The Creation of Adam c.1508–1512", and lastly Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Time c.1931", which are some of my favorite pieces that I have studied in art history at UNT. The thought process behind "The Creation of Adam" altered artwork was my idea of putting an interesting focal point between the two figures where the original focal point was in the piece. Putting the half Sun on Adam's side I wanted to communicate life, creation, and destruction as Adam was one of the two people who had eaten the apple in the Bible to curse us, humans, with sin. The Sun represents life and destruction as it is a source of life for the growth of the planet, but it also represents the unfortunate impending doom in the foreseeing future. The altered artwork of Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Time" was to flip the original subject matter that Dali communicated in the work, I added a dagger in the middle-ground of the piece making a focal point so that I can make some visual and physical movement that extrudes out from the dagger, so that I may change the overall movement of the piece. The dagger doesn't necessarily mean anything in the subject matter than its purpose to distort the piece in a reasonable matter as daggers are an item of destruction. In the altered Dali piece, created some movement through line as I purposely extended every line to communicate to the viewer that the piece is in the middle-ground and making a shockwave-like effect in the piece. The altered artwork from Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" was just an idea that I had from as I was the idea of love that is being faded and swept away from nothingness by creating swirls from the focal point to the right of the two figures making the viewer feel perpetuated that the two loved ones and their conditional love for each other be swept away by almost nothing. This was all an experiment to also practice and sharpen my photoshop skills, so maybe one day I can land an internship or job in my profession.

Illustrator Work

Description

When working on these artworks I made, they were mostly for practice for the program as I have never used Adobe Illustrator before, I am not much of an artist when it comes to digital drawings so this was going to be challenging for sure. I tried to dive into more intricate figures and some other works that were more challenging like trying to draw a human form, but using a mouse and no drawing pad made it incredibly hard. I just stuck with the basics and what I been messing around with which were shapes, gradients, and color-changing with some knowledge of color relationships. So what I wanted to do was create some kind of Op-Art like work as that has been one of my favorite abstract work that I have studied. I wanted to get some shapes and color them in gradients and solid colors based on some color relationships to add depth and play with the perception within the colors and placement of shapes. When experimenting with the shape tools, gradients, and colors I just went for something basic, but at the same time intriguing to look at; all the works I made mostly have a central focal point that lets the viewer interact with the piece and to explore from the focal point to all around the composition. I mostly depicted repetition, reflection, and symmetry in most of my pieces through shape as I wanted to create works that were mostly abstract to play with the human eye a bit, although many aren't necessarily messing with your eye or perception of the artwork.

Bees and the Flowers (Processing Exploration)

Description

When learning processing/coding to make art, it was a challenge that was going to break me and it did, learning the coding language and a heap of other things was honestly challenging. But as time went on, I started to get more better although the things I could do were simple as I only knew to upload an image and alter it in some ways. I tried to come up with an idea of a collection of flowers that had some sort of disturbance going on in the image, so I started to look up tutorials, as I found you can make ellipses on the image and randomize them. These ellipses gave the idea of some movement like a bee or any animal that interacts with flowers, so I came up with sporadic movement throughout the image to give the image some life as I added ellipses to represent those animals and insects flying around these flowers. With the knowledge I knew from coding and being a beginner, I thought I did well as I ran into many problems within program and learning coding fresh and from a few video tutorials I got a bit of a grasp, nevertheless, I came up with an interesting collection of artworks. I added some movement to bring life into the still image so that it may represent little insects and critters that are randomly flying around above the flowers like how bees fly around a patch of flowers to pollenate them so that they may bloom and spread their pollen everywhere to bring life around the landscape.

Corrupted Works

Description

These are a collection of artworks from three different digital art programs, I have created some optical art as it is one of my favorite types of artwork, all these works have some sort of visual depth, emotion, and weight as they have some sort of visual disturbance across all the artworks. The subject matter behind all these artworks is that they all revolve around a focal point or a period where they become corrupt. As in the top left art piece (done in photoshop), the focal point is towards the bottom right where the hypnotic circle is to add some visual direction for the viewer to start gazing at as they explore the rest of the photo. The top right one is a picture from the Denton Square courthouse to pay homage to where I live and sometimes the emotion I feel living around here in college as an art major. The top right gif is me when I was about five where I spent all day at the YMCA where my parents would workout and we would be dropped off at the pool to have fun. The gif has some meaning in the matter behind it as at the YMCA I was not the greatest kid, I would get in trouble a lot as I was always trying to find new ways to have fun around the YMCA, the lines just represent the hues in the image (this work was done in processing and made with a gif website). The last artwork that has the eyes is a work I did in Illustrator, the eyes represent the viewer and their eyes as they explore the work in front of them. All the eyes are different colors to represent different diversities, genders, and unique traits some people may have as all eyes are not normally pink, purple, red, and so on. The focal point in the background is the corrupted element that resides in all the works, the background represents the many kinds of people we have in the world today as there are many genders, cultures, unique talents, traits, and personalities we have today. The "corruption" in general  in all the works depicts COVID 19 and how it affects each and every one of our lives today in 2020.

These are all works that derived from my pre-interior design class which we had to come up with a design for a new lobby for a hotel in the Dallas area, and I choose the beautiful Adolphus Hotel. I chose to come up with a quite mid-century modern take, but kept it quite classical with all the wainscotting panels and adding walnut paneling to the sides of all the walls to contrast with the white/black marble. I also added their logo to the foyer with carpet and a living wall encased with glass for the receptionist area. The style is reminiscent of Georgian and mid-century and I wanted to make the lobby portrayed as calming, warm, and opulent.
